Handsome Charlie’s Singout (1870s )
Frederick Pease Harlow worked as a square-rig sailor in the 1870s near the end of the full-blown chantey tradition. From his “Chanteying Aboard American Ships” comes this rare notation of a “singout”- a personal musical phrase for solo work or to start a group job that may be continued with a call-and-response chantey. This singout is specifically noted as being of African-American origin.
