about

Life Like a Sea In Constant Motion (1792/1800-1802)
William Litten, the British naval fiddler who was also the source for “Litten’s Hornpipe,” notated this glorious hymn-like melody for a song first mentioned in the 1792 collection “The Edinburgh Syren, or, Musical Bouquet, Being a New Selection of Modern Songs Sung at the Various Places of Amusement in Great Britain and Ireland.” The lyrics are a hymn to reason:

“Life's like a sea, in constant motion.
Sometimes high and sometimes low
Where every one must brave the ocean,
Whatsoever winds do blow.
Tho' at night by squalls or showers.
Or driven by some gentle gales.
If danger’s rife, be ever ready
To manage well the swelling sails.

What, tho' the wayward winds would bluster
Let us not give way to fear;
But all our patience let us muster.
And learn by reason how to steer…”
